Since 1 January 2024, private individuals in Belgium are required to register their home charger with their grid operator. This new requirement responds to the need to better understand the future electricity needs of households and businesses, especially with the expected increase in the number of electric vehicles on Belgian roads. This information will help grid operators to assess necessary changes to the distribution network and to carry out targeted adjustments.
Note: Anyone who fails to comply with this obligation risks an administrative fine of 250 EUR.
Where should I file this tax return?
The registration of charging stations for electric vehicles is mandatory throughout Belgium, but the specific authorities differ per region:
Flanders: You must register all charging points with a charging capacity of 5 kVA or more that you connect to the low-voltage grid with Fluvius.
Brussels: In the Brussels-Capital Region, private individuals must register their charging point with the grid operator Sibelga.
