What is the capacity tariff?

The Flemish energy regulator (VREG) has decided to calculate the grid tariffs (the price you pay as a user to the grid operator Fluvius) in a different way in the Flemish Region from 1 January 2023. From that moment on, the grid tariff will no longer be calculated solely on the basis of your total consumption, but also on the basis of your peak consumption in each month. In this way, the regulator wants to encourage all users to spread their electricity consumption as well as possible and to limit consumption peaks.

Users with a low monthly measured peak consumption will thus pay a lower grid tariff than users with a high peak consumption, regardless of the total amount of electricity they consume.

For basic information about the capacity tariff, we would like to refer you to the website of Fluvius, the grid operator in Flanders.

The capacity tariff is currently only relevant if you have a digital meter at home. For analogue meters, a flat-rate peak consumption is applied.

How can you take the capacity tariff into account?

The capacity tariff itself cannot be changed, as it is a policy decision that applies to the whole of Flanders .

Smart charging with Blossom allows you to adjust your charging sessions to your generated solar power, limit peak consumption, and benefit from dynamic tariffs.

We use technology that works independently of the type of home charger. This ensures maximum flexibility.

Our Blossom Slim charging dongle is connected to the P1 port of your digital meter. More information about this user port can be found here.

This way, your charging station will automatically charge slower when there are many other consumers active on your home network, and charge faster again when there are few other consumers.

If you opt for the lowest possible maximum peak for your charging station, keep in mind that your charging station will suddenly not charge when other energy consumers in your home demand the power as a priority.

You choose entirely for yourself whether you want to set a maximum peak, and what this should be. This choice is determined by your willingness to pay a lower or higher capacity rate in exchange for the user convenience of charging slower or faster.

How can I find out my current peak?

You can only consult and adjust peak consumption with a digital meter.

You can consult your peak consumption via the grid operator Fluvius.

If you want to continue charging at the maximum capacity of your grid connection, you do not have to do anything. However, any additional costs in the grid tariff will not be reimbursed additionally.

Is there also a maximum peak for charging stations at work?

The peak power limitation does not apply in the same way to charging stations at work. There you can charge your car at a higher charging speed at any time. We therefore advise everyone with an electric car to charge at the company car park as often as possible.
